Course Information

In pursuance of the goals set by 1997 Kyoto Protocol and the 2015 Paris Agreement negotiated under the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) to “stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system”, several countries are making ambitious programmes to replace fossil fuel based generation with Renewable Energy Resources. comprising Wind, Solar, Small Hydro, Biomass, Generation from Waste etc. RES provides for sustainable energy development, protection of environment and now have become economically viable.

Integrating RE generation in the grid poses problems due to typical characteristics of RE generation - variability, un predictability, intermittency and higher penetration can cause changes in power flow patterns, frequency &voltage excursions, ramp limitations on conventional power plants, balancing and reserve requirements etc. These complexities have to be addressed to smoothly integrate RES into the grid. A framework has to be built with new dedicated control centres (Renewable Energy Management Centres), Forecasting Systems, changes in Power Markets, Operation and control protocols, Grid Codes etc. All these aspects with solutions will be discussed in the training. Power Systems are becoming more complex due to addition of Re resources, increasing size and load growth. For ensuring reliability and security of large Power Grids, better monitoring tools and logistics to counter evolving instabilities and disturbances, Early Warning Systems are required and Synchro- Phasor Technology bridges this gap.

Synchro Phasor Technology is based on Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) which can transmit 25/50/100 Phasors per second to control centres, much faster than SCADA systems. The training covers all these aspects to empower the power engineers from all disciplines. This training on “Modern Power Systems with Renewable Energy Resources and Grid integration Issues” gives the extensive roadmap for the Power Engineers, academicians, research scholars, industrialists and entrepreneurs to harness the green energy by planning in advance the counter measures to combat the integration issues effectively and to ensure secure grids.
